Huerfano County is part of Colorado's 3rd Judicial District with Las Animas County. The local state court operation is listed by the Colorado Judicial Branch at the Huerfano County Judicial Center in Walsenburg. District Court is the broad trial court. It hears civil cases in any amount, domestic relations, felony criminal matters, juvenile cases, probate matters, mental health cases, and some appeals from lower court decisions.

County Court operates from the same local court system but has a narrower role. It handles civil cases under $25,000, misdemeanors, traffic infractions, felony complaints that may be sent to District Court, protection orders, and small claims. Huerfano District Court vs County Court

The District Court, County Court, and Municipal Court split affects where records are searched and where hearings appear. A felony case, divorce case, probate case, or high-value civil case is not the same as a municipal parking ticket. The court name on the ticket, pleading, notice, or docket result is the fastest clue.

Huerfano Court Case Flow

Case movement depends on the starting court. A misdemeanor or traffic case may stay in County Court. A felony complaint can begin in County Court and later move to District Court. A Walsenburg municipal ticket can stay municipal unless it is a DUI or felony matter, because the city page says those tickets are written into County and District combined court. Fowler is listed as District Judge. Dawn Mann is listed as County Court Judge for Huerfano County, and John Mochel is listed as County Court Judge for Las Animas and Huerfano Counties. Stephen Talbot is listed as Magistrate. Lorraine A. Cisneros is listed as Clerk of Court and Probate Registrar.

Those staff details matter because many District Court records questions are not solved by a database. The clerk handles record requests, certified copies, probate registrar functions, and many counter questions. Huerfano District Court Appeals

Appeal paths depend on the court that issued the decision. County Court decisions generally appeal to District Court.
